Workshop: Using Food Stories to Create Connection and Build Community
Food connects us to the people and places in our lives, and our food stories help us form connections with others. This workshop will explore the power of sharing food stories to create personal connections between teller and listener, build trust, and address social disconnection. Attendees will learn about Community Plate’s philosophy and methodology around sharing food and stories, and the food-focused story prompts that we use to encourage sharing, listening, and foster connection. Using prompts, attendees will share their own food stories and discover how we find community and connection through our shared humanity around food and stories.

Pi(e) Day Celebration & Fundraiser!
Save room for pi(e)! Whether you’re an enthusiastic mathematician, a precise baker, or just someone who loves a good pie, come celebrate the mathematical magic of 3.14159 at Community Plate’s first annual Pi(e) Day Celebration and Fundraiser, on March 14 (3.14), at the Smith Center at Wolfe’s Neck Center in Freeport.
This pie-centric potluck will feature sweet and savory pastries, pie-themed stories, and an epic (silent & live) auction of spectacular pies by some of Maine’s very best professional and home bakers and other notable Mainers. Storytellers will be telling pie stories, and possibly pi stories! This ap-pie-tizing event is a fundraiser for Community Plate—tickets are a suggested donation of $31.41 (but as always, we believe that cost should not be a barrier to participation in community). Bring a hearty appetite, your favorite pie or tart, and a recipe and story to share. REGISTER HERE.
The Corner: A Monthly Evening of Community Storytelling
Community Plate invites you to come to The Corner, a free monthly evening of community storytelling held the second Thursday of each month at LA Arts in Lewiston.
MARCH THEME: “UNEXPECTED LOVE” Cupid's arrow doth love to strike from directions unanticipated. It's the nature of love to catch us unawares. It's not just romantic love that can come without warning, or wrapped in surprise. Have you ever been listening to the radio and swooned over the lyrics of a random song? Has your dad ever vetoed a pet, or been determined to hate it, only to find himself in love and attached to it? Do you have a story about a place, person, or object you fell in love with--or played a surprising part in your own love story? A bus, perhaps? As the bard (or was it The Troggs?) says, love is all around us. And when we're not looking, when we've sworn it off, when we're in the most random situation, love finds a way in. So come to The Corner in March, you never know what you might find.
New to The Corner this year: Bring a dessert to share! In addition to pizza from DaVinci’s, we’ve added a DESSERT POTLUCK!

Like our clocks, we're moving forward, observing the revitalizing of old traditions and the creation of new ones. Join us as we come together to share food and stories and work to transition from a gathering of individuals to true community. REGISTER HERE.

Community Plate invites you to come to The Corner, a free monthly evening of community storytelling held the second Thursday of each month at LA Arts in Lewiston.
DECEMBER THEME: “SHORT DAYS, LONG NIGHTS.” As we head into December's winter solstice, the days are getting shorter and the nights are getting longer. It's a time of year when our relationship to time and light changes. A little bit of daylight becomes all the more precious and long dark evenings are opportunities to hunker down and turn inward towards introspection. Think about times when light or darkness had an impact on your life, either literally or emotionally. Do you have a story about someone who was a ray of light in your life, even briefly, or a long eventful pilgrimage you made to the point of totality. You might also tell a story about an experience that was over too soon, or one that stretched on too long: The date that seemingly would never end, or a night on the town that you wished would last forever.

Community Plate invites you to come to The Corner, a monthly evening of community storytelling held the second Thursday of each month at LA Arts in Lewiston.
November's theme for The Corner is: "Oh, De-ah!" November is hunting season in Maine, and we're on the hunt for your favorite stories that involve Maine wildlife: deer, bears, racoons, possums, owls, squirrels, chipmunks, you name it, we've all crossed paths with the denizens of the Maine woods at one time or another. "Oh, De-ah!" is what you might say about any animal encounter gone wrong, but also about an unwelcome surprise or unexpected happening. And of course, it's also how we Mainers address a loved one out of affection or exasperation. So think about the last time you might have exclaimed, "Oh, De-ah!", come to The Corner, and do tell!

The Corner: A Monthly Evening of Community Storytelling
Community Plate invites you to come to The Corner, a monthly evening of community storytelling held the second Thursday of each month at LA Arts in Lewiston.
October's theme is "Let's Eat!" We're putting out the call for your favorite food stories: That unforgettable meal, the most delicious dish you ever tasted, the terrible food your parents made you eat, family food traditions handed down over generations, or new ones that you're creating. "Let's Eat!" is also a call to action, the thing we say at the start of a meal... so think about beginnings, stories about starting something new, getting people together for a purpose, a sweet new initiative, or one that went sour. The themes at The Corner are always just a starting point, meant to be interpreted broadly to spark your storytelling appetite, and get the creative juices flowing!
Plus! DESSERT POTLUCK! Bring a dessert to share!
